NH medical company reports a potential data breach

Another potential data breach caused by a ransomware virus.

This potential breach hits close to home at medical provider Atlantic Digestive Specialists (ADS), with locations in Somersworth, Hampton and Portsmouth, NH.

Below is an excerpt of ADS’s statement which was released to the NH Attorney General’s Office on 6/20/2017.

On February 20, 2017, ADS discovered that some of its systems were infected with ransomware. The impacted systems were immediately taken offline. ADS completed remediation of the affected systems by February 22, 2017. ADS has been working diligently, with the assistance of third-party forensic investigators, to determine the full nature and scope of this incident. Based on the investigation, it appears the ransomware began affecting the systems on or around February 18, 2017.

To date, ADS has no evidence of any actual or attempted misuse of information as a result of this incident. However, the systems that were impacted by this incident may have contained information including name, date of birth, address information, telephone number, medical record number, health insurance information, and clinical/diagnostic information. For some individuals, the impacted information may have also included a Social Security number.

According to seacoastonline.com, Senior Assistant Attorney James Boffetti made a statement saying “We get notified about so many of these things (data breaches/ransomware attacks) it’s frightening, I bet we get 10 a week on average.”

That means 520 New Hampshire businesses each year are reporting data breaches, and I am sure there are just as many breaches going unreported. If these metrics continue, it’s really only a matter of time before something like this will happen to your business.

  • Do you have a backup and disaster recovery system in place? Have you recently tested your backup?
  • Is all of your software up-to-date?
  • How is your antivirus?
  • Is your Microsoft software patched?
